Is there a solution for Visual Studio 2008 breaking out like crazy on RDC?

Editing with Visual Studio 2008 through a remote desktop connection is a crazy exercise in patience, as the screen paints and repaints and repaints and flashes like crazy.

Is there any relief for this?

Both sides are running Windows 7. Vanilla Visual Studio without installation. Literally every keystroke leads to the fact that the entire window is repainted, often several times.

It turns out I had Remote Desktop running in 32-bit color mode. In 24-bit mode, it is much faster.
