How to use the infrared port on the back of my netbook to change the channel

I always sit on my couch, watching TV and surfing the net, and I have this idea related to hair to program the infrared port on my laptop to switch the channel. I am programming C # but want to know if anyone else has tried. How to access the port? How can I capture what my universal remote sends to play on TV when I press a button? I could also use this method to program some of my children's toy robots. Maybe this will interest them in programming! Thanks in advance.

I believe that you will see IR as a serial port. You can use it from C # using the System.IO.Ports.SerialPort( msdn ) class .

It could be your starting point.

As for strength, it is strong enough to control your TV (if your living room does not have a width of 10 meters :)). There are programs on PocketPC (universal programmable remotes that capture the IR signal from your TV that you need to configure) that do the same.

You can use the SerialPorts object in .NET. Here is an example project that can give you some ideas: http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/IRDADemo

I studied this in the distant past when IR transceivers were commonplace. Most are not very powerful and will not reach more than 1 meter. It is also difficult to program the infrared port using a serial interface so that it matches the required infrared code. The form that I remember worked only on some TVs. For PDAs, they were more successful, but usually had a weak IR transmitter, so you had to be too close to the TV to be useful.
