Multiple websites or multiple web applications in IIS6?

Assuming each application has its own application pool and that I have an unlimited number of domains / IP addresses, are there any advantages to hosting applications as separate websites, rather than for a single site containing multiple applications?

Above my head:

  • It’s easier to manage / stop / start individual sites than applications under an existing site.
  • If you accidentally change the root web.config file, you may have unintended consequences in child applications.
  • Inaccurate for IIS configuration changes in IIS Manager.
  • /IP- - , ( IP-, SSL ).
