How do I track a Google Alert RSS feed as if it’s happened?

Question

I have a Google Alert that I set to deliver as an RSS feed as if it happened

But reports that an RSS feed is the only way to get an RSS feed,
or
is there a way to get a notification from a Google alert because the feed is published by Google? (say through a web service, etc.)

Support for Google PubSubHubbub alerts , which essentially pushes you to receive updated content notifications if you sign up for a channel hub.
