IE 6 popup menu selection area too narrow

I have a drop-down menu with a width set to 142 pixels, however, the selection area when you drop out of the menu should be larger because it has text that exceeds this width. Firefox (and most modern browsers) is smart and expands the selection to fit this text. However, IE 6 and unverified new versions of IE do not display this text and keep the selection area the same width as the drop-down list. The problem here is how can I get IE to expand the selection area where you click the desired selection without increasing the width of the dropdown menu area without displaying a drop-down list. Hope this makes sense.

: D cheers (DEATH TO IE)

I'm afraid you can’t. Even in the best of times, there is very little control over the drop-down boxes, and IE6 is usually considered the worst.

Quick 'dirty. I just managed to process the trial version ( hacking Yahoo , but it's better if you want to revitalize growth / reduction):

<html>
<body>
  <select style="width:100px;" onmouseover="this.style.width='auto'; this.focus();" onblur="this.style.width='100px';">
    <option>Tiny</option>
    <option>Und das verrry, verrrry, verrrrrrrrrrry long one!</option>
  </select>
</body>
</html>
