Choosing Linux for open source development

I work on the Windows XP platform and use Aptana Studio, MySQL for developing PHP. I want to know which Linux version and taste will fit my development goals?

I will also go for Ubuntu for several reasons.

  • It has regular / predictable which I find very useful as I can plan ahead for updates.
  • It provides Desktop and Server Editions. Potentially allowing you to become familiar with the deployment environment if you choose to use the Ubuntu server while using the Ubuntu desktop.
  • Great documentation that can be found here is Ubuntu Desktop and here is Ubuntu Server , which should cover most of your needs.
  • Friendly and helpful community forums .

I have been using Ubuntu as a desktop computer and server for quite some time now and found it to be a great distribution combination that certainly made my life easier.

... But I suppose that any Linux distribution will do; you may not always have the latest versions of PHP / MySQL, but PHP 5.2.x should be available for most distributions, I suppose.
And, if necessary, you can compile what you need from sources (sometimes I do it for PHP to get the latest version, since Ubuntu provides only 5.2.x, not 5.3.x)
