What happened to the MVCContrib subcontrollers

I see several articles about interwebs about the MVCContrib subcontroller function, but I don't see anything on the codeplex site about this.

Has this feature been superseded by something in MVC2?

What is the best approach for rendering controls with their own data pipeline (present them to their own controller, display data from their own controller) in MVC?

MVC2 Beta has Html.RenderAction, which allows you to call actions "children" - I believe that this is almost the same as the MVCContrib subcontrollers.
