A simple question: is it possible to run two instances of SharePoint on the same server?

With a not so simple answer, I suspect.

Three answers:

A server can only be connected to one "configuration database", that is, you can only run one instance of FARM.

The server can host multiple shared service providers, so you can run multiple instances of SEARCH, USER, MY SITE. Not recommended.

The server can host as many web applications (websites) as possible.
