Automatic font recognition using Python

Question

As you may have heard, there is the WhatTheFont online font recognition service

I am interested in the technology behind this tool. I think that basically we can divide this into two parts:

• Generate images from font files of various formats, see http://www.fileinfo.com/filetypes/font for a list of font file extensions.

• Compare the submitted image with all generated images

I appreciate that you share some tips or python code to implement the two steps above.
