Small Software Licensing

I will soon be hail, and I am just starting to work on my personal website. I wrote some small applications that I would like to use as sample code for potential employers. I could allow the general public to download and use my applications, and, of course, I would not want anyone to just take my code and call it mine. Do I need to attach a license to my programs? If so, which one works best?

You might want to browse categories of licenses from the Open Source Initiative .

Popular options are the new BSD License (allows any use, but requires that your copyrights remain intact), and the GPL (allows any use, but makes strong redistribution requirements).

Edit:

As for distribution, you can freely distribute your code the way you want. You can use an open source license and store the code on your website. You can use an open source license and only issue the code by email if you want. Distribution and licensing are two completely different problems.
