Finding out how a developer processes abandoned field projects

Question

I am doing several interviews with my interlocutors for the first time for my replacement. I want to know how they will approach the brownfields project , but I'm not sure how to formulate this question.

I would like to know what their relationship is: for example. throw and rewrite, use a tool for refactoring, execute code and understand what books they read (for example, "Effectively work with outdated code").

How do you know how someone takes on the development of brownfields software?
