How to split a large file into smaller ones (more FTP friendly) and merge them later?

My server does not allow upload / download large files. On the other hand, I created a bootloader that should upload / download large files. How can I split a large file into smaller subfiles .. and then merge? An already made C # library would be great ... but I'm glad to hear suggestions on how to program this myself ... or even use the utility.

In windows you can easily split it into WinRar.

cat bigfile* > bigfile.tar.gz
