Should I put images in a subdomain to speed up the loading of the site?

I read somewhere that browsers can only send a few concurrent requests for resources in a domain. So, if we divide the resources into subdomains or can be domains .. will it accelerate?

Have you experimented with this? What were the results or problems, if any?

This definitely helps, but start with css sprites first. Also keep in mind that for each additional domain a DNS query is required and therefore slows down!
