I am currently at a stage that can study Windows kernel programming, but I wonder what types of tasks I can do?

For the Linux kernel, it seems that so far only a bunch of drivers work with the work there.

You could write low-level code that interacted with it (the optimization goals I assume). Also drivers such as the Linux world, too.
