Writing an image processing application for satellite image analysis

I need to start working on a satellite image analysis application to identify some kind of human-made structure. I would like to use C or Java for this.

For the satellite, I plan to use Google Maps data.

I have three questions here:

  • What is the best source for GIS data besides Google Maps / earth.
  • The best language for writing such an application, given that I have to use third-party APIs
  • Is there an available image processing engine that identifies human-created structures?

I have a lot of questions, but I hope that smarter guys can help here.

Take a look at this demo: Finding vegetation in a multispectral image , part of the image processing tool in MATLAB. This is due to your satellite image analysis problem in order to find specific patterns.

I believe this is a great example of what you can easily achieve with MATLAB using very small code.
