Capturing keyboard events in Dojox GFX

Can I record keyboard events inside a chart created using Dojox.GFX?

We have a simple graphical application that includes some shapes drawn on the surface. We would like to add some simple keyboard interaction, for example. using the Delete key to delete the shape and using "Ctrl + A" to select all the shapes.

I tried adding dojo.connect and shape.connect expressions for "onkeypress" and "onkeyup", but they never work. We are already collecting mouse events and they are working fine.
