Custom Markdown for PHP, handling newlines

Question

I need a special Markdown library for PHP that converts newlines to <br/>without having to insert double space at the end of the line, sort of like here on SO. I looked on the Internet, but to no avail. I know that I can just change the standard library, but my regular expression skills are none.

Does anyone know of the existence of such a library or know how easy it is to change the default behavior?

EDIT: Dumb me, SO does not work, this seems to be standard Markdown behavior. However, such features are used on github.com.
