Secure MySQL connection through PHP in ActionScript 3 using the AMFPHP framework

My Flash movie would like to talk to a MySQL server to retrieve and save data between MySQL and SWF. I know that AMFPHP can help with communication, but is there a safe way to encrypt texts sent between two parties (except for the hash password in MD5)? To my knowledge, AMFPHP sends data in plain text by default.

In addition, I heard that CPU usage during network requests in Flash is quite large. Any relief frame suggestions?
