Is it advisable to load an ad display in an iframe?

Some ad campaigns are very heavy for JavaScript, and this has a dramatic effect on page load time because the ad is usually built-in JavaScript - useful parts of the page are not displayed until the ad does its job.

It seems that the solution loads the ad in an iframe to display useful content for the user while the ad is loading in the background and "locks in place" when it's ready.

I was told a number of shortcomings of the iframe approach:

  • You are limited in the types of campaigns you can place — for example, without expanding ads that roll content.
  • If you have multiple ad units on the same page, you cannot combine campaigns.
  • Advertisers avoid iframes because it is easier to use false impressions in the game.

Are these real problems? If so, are there any workarounds or do I need to show display ads on a page?

These are real problems. I would also add that:

  • When the search engines find ads, they will add them to their database in the form of separate web pages, that is, the link in the search results will be on the advertisement page (iframe), and not on the page containing the iframe.

  • Limited access users find it more difficult to navigate to ads and click on their links. For example, if the user has only access to the keyboard.
