Built-in stretch button with CSS background photo

Does anyone know if there is a bulletproof (XHTML1.1 compliant, cross-browser, non-javascript) way to use CSS and background images to include an inline link in a visual button that will stretch to accommodate a different amount of text (or change text size)?

I think I need to use background images, as the design buttons have rounded corners with a different color frame. It should work in IE6 (government work).

I am sure that the answer is no, but, as always, I thought it was worth checking.

Among other things, I have already tried options for sliding door technology , but I can’t get it to work, how I need to work inside (that is, inside a paragraph), and I can’t set a fixed width.

EDIT: There are several buttons, each of which has a different color for the foreground, border and background. They also have a gradient "face", but there is no need for transparency or something else "unorthodox". Unfortunately, I cannot refer to examples, since I am under the NDA.
