Is there a compact or express version of SQL Server that I can pack using my WinForms application and is free?

Is there a lite version of SQL Server that I could use that has characteristics:

  • Free (assuming my winforms application is semi-commercial)
  • Could it be indifferently packaged for deployment as part of a click-once winforms application? (i.e. ease of installation for the user).
  • Light weight for the user (ideally, something that runs only when using the winforms application that uses it, but better than using XML serialization to ensure stability).

The best choice of SQLite . There, the implementation of ADO.NET on .NET is as simple as any other database. Well, a good example is Google Chrome.

There is only one unresolved issue: security. It pains me to restrict access to the SQLite database file, as far as I know.
