How to get a list of recently opened documents for an application?

Question

I found it easy to add a recently opened document using SHAddToRecentDocs

The transition lists of Windows 7 somehow do this, knowing only the shortcut of the program. Programs added to the Windows 7 start menu also allow access to their recently opened list.

Prefers the .NET shell for the Windows API, but will do something :)
