Is the "build" directory necessary in an Xcode project?

What am I missing if I delete the build directory from the Xcode 3.0 project every time I want to transfer the project (to reduce the size)?

Even after cleaning up the project, there are still about 5.9 MB of files that I don’t know what they are doing. I am wondering if anyone has any information about this.

Thanks.

I delete the build directory all the time. This is even recommended when you use svn to ignore, including the assembly directory, since it messed up the assembly.

It just stores files with predefined objects among some other temporary files, so you will not recompile it all from scratch with every build.
