When the time has come to say: "Now I need to create a user control!"

When are you thinking of creating a custom control in .NET? Do you have some basic criteria to exclude your code from the page and introduce a new user control?

I usually try to follow this to decide if I need a user control or not:

  • When a page seems more readable with a separate user control
  • When a part of a form looks like it can be used from different pages over and over again
