Php.ini Due to Ajax loading slowly?

A strange mistake here ... ajax is slowly loading on this server from day one ... we thought it was an internet connection until yesterday. I accidentally added an invalid extension to the php.ini file (that is, extension = php_pdf.dll), and then suddenly, ajax booted up very quickly. When I took out this invalid extension, ajax booted up again. My colleges and I have not created a php configuration file, so I'm not sure why this happens ... maybe a parameter is included in the php configuration file that causes ajax to load slowly and when this invalid extension is turned on, it skips the setting ... not sure. But hopefully someone can help explain this!

If someone can point me in the right direction why this is happening, I would appreciate it! Our slow ajax loading will not be fixed until it is sorted and the guy who created the php.ini file no longer works here.

You might want to install firebug if you are not already using it (this is the webdeveloper plugin for firefox).
