Emacs FTP does not work on certain sites in Ubuntu

This really baffles me, because no matter how hard I try, I don't seem to find this problem on Google.

I am trying to edit files on a web server using Emacs Ange-FTP on Ubuntu. I type in / user @ ftp.host.com: /, then Emacs asks for the password that I give, and then it says:

Listing /user@ftp.host.com:/...

forever and ever.

What I do not understand is that a) the same thing works in Emacs on Windows, b) FTP transfer to other web servers using the same technology (and with the same web host) works fine, and c) FTP connection to this server using gFTP in Ubuntu works fine.

I do not understand why this does not work, and it pushes me against the wall! Anyone have any suggestions?

Well, stsquad worked, it was a passive mode that is not used for specific servers. Using M-x customize-option RET ange-ftp-try-passive-modeand switching to t(found in EmacsWiki ) made it work.

You can set debug-on-quitand dial C-gwhen Emacs gets stuck to see what happens at the elisp level, and then see if there are any settings that you can switch for your specific situation. But if you can access the host using ssh, you can just skip debugging and start using Tramp .
