Windows Azure - Desktop Services - Under the Hood

When you use the Table Services API in Windows Azure, what does it really do under the hood? I think I read somewhere that this does not use SQL Server. Does this make a hash table, and then the filters really work like map / zoom actions? I'm really new to this, and I wonder what he actually does.
