How to create a server for broadcasting live video?

I need to create a system for broadcasting videos like Youtube. But video is real-time video, which means that the video is captured, converted and broadcast immediately. Is there any open source software?

I really need some practical guides, including requirements (hardware and software).

Thanks in advance ~

Red5 is probably the better-known open source streaming server capable of real-time streaming. However, the prices of commercial streaming servers have plummeted. It's been a while since I messed around with Red5, but I found this a bit too immature.

  • Adobe Flash Media Server . This server sets the standard. Used to be prohibitively expensive, but cheap these days.
  • Wowza : Java-based, so it works on almost everything. Their support forum has tutorials and people to help.

Both Adobe and Wowza provide limited servers (10 streams) for free.

Wowza QuickTime Broadcaster. . .
