Are there any protocols / standards that work on TCP that are optimized for high throughput and low latency?

The only thing I can think of is FAST .

At the moment, I have developed a simple text protocol limited to special characters. I would like to adopt a protocol that is designed for fast transmission and possibly supports the compression and minimization of data that travels over a TCP socket.
