Connecting two planes in 3d

Given two planes located and rotated arbitrarily to each other, I try to determine which vertices should be connected. The image below (planes in black, connecting edges in red) illustrates two examples of how planes might look:

Comparing the distances between the vertices will not work, because the planes (not necessary) are located directly above each other, and comparing the xyz components will also not work, since they are (not necessary) parallel and, therefore, can be twisted. I can’t come up with any other solutions, so I wonder if I need to go back and approach the problem differently?
