According to Finding how similar two lines are, there are several methods for calculating the measure of similarity between two lines.

Soundex is a very bad algorithm and it is currently available for mysql. Is there any other method implementation for mysql?

here is UDF, which you can download in windows , or one you can compile for Linux . they will be much faster than the stored procedure.
