Editing RDL Files Using Visual Studio 2008

I installed SQL Server 2008 Express on two workstations. On one workstation, she updated the VS2008 installation so that I can create report projects that contain reports as * .rdl files. On other workstations, VS2008 can create or edit * .rdlc files. The report editing interface is also different.

I don’t understand where this difference comes from. There are two main differences between the two workstations: - one of them is x86 and did not have VS installed before installing SQL Server 2008 Express - the other is x64, and VS2005 and VS2008 were previously installed

It seems to me that on the second workstation, the SQL Server installer updated VS2005 instead of VS2008.

I understand that rdlc files are more recent and possibly better, but I would like to edit the rdl file for compatibility purposes, and also because I'm used to this user interface.

Any tips?

Many thanks.

Business Intelligence Design Studio allows you to create .rdl files. It is installed from the SQL Server installer, but it actually modifies the Visual Studio installation so that you can create specific SSRS projects.

Here is another question in RDLC and RDL:

When to use RDLC over RDL reports?
