Google Wave Applications

Question

I understand that Google wave is a tool for communication and collaboration. But is it limited only to an interface like IM / Twitter or can it do much more? Could this be something completely different from the conversation format from top to bottom?

Let's say I want to create a collaborative photo editing app with google wave. which API should i use? or am I not getting it?

It would be a gadget, I think (perhaps with a robot). I’m not sure that editing photos will really be a practical application of Wave, although the “joint canvas” certainly works.
