How to tell a person that he needs to improve his skills?

You are working with someone in the same project, and this is someone writing bad code. It’s not so bad to shoot him, you cannot work with him, but

  • a person does not adhere to coding rules.
  • code is not always covered by unit tests (and it should be)
  • the code is sloppy and has no comments, where it should have them
  • a person does not know design patterns well / does not know at all
  • put your clothes on the table as he needs a seat.

So, how do you tell him that he needs to update his skills without harming him? I described something that is a problem. But imagine that everything is in order, except for some things that really harm the project. What to do so that you are still friends, but the guy really understood that he needed to change something?

Just become professional and point out issues in bug tracking, code reviews, or any other tools you have to track work items and bugs.

The responsibility of the PM and project manager is to determine who is responsible and to politely inform the person. This is their job, and if they cannot do it, your project (and probably the company) is most likely not very good for the job.

This is a good candidate for the entire company to conduct code reviews within a month. You will not cross it out (this is good, unless everything works out), and you can better help him.

Missing / bad comments? Well, sometimes comments are no better than gratuitous or incorrect.

Incorrect code? May be so. Send an example or two. Maybe he is a good coder and you are not so bright. After all, PMs are usually not so vibrant, they just know how to kiss our asses better than some of us care.

Design templates? Lactating bingo feed.

But taking off your clothes and leaving them on your desk is strange. IMHO.
