Control Panel Item Icons (Windows XP)

Control panel items are usually registered in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace, but many built-in panels are not listed there, for example, the "Automatic updates" element.

I am trying to figure out where the icon used for the Automatic Updates element is. If you open the control panel in Tile mode (48x48 icons), you will see that the icon is scaled, but all icon resources in all Windows Update files have a 48x48 subimage, so I can’t figure it out.

This is a similar story with the NVidia control panel element: the icon is black and appears to be reduced with a reduced image size larger than 48x48, but the actual nvidia control panel files do not contain this black icon (instead they have a silver version) When I create a shortcut for the control panel item and check its binary bits, there is no path to the specified icon, just to the cpl file itself (with a completely different icon). I checked the registry and there are no clues there.

Any ideas?

Control panel applets can be registered in several different ways or even absent (if they are in the folder %system%):
