Fast way to enter ex mode in vim?

Is there some kind of orthodox way to enter ex-mode faster, for example, with one keystroke, instead of pressing shift; for ':'? Why has this character ever been chosen for such an often accessible mode? Often enough to annoy, I accidentally miss the shift key, start typing the ex command, and find that I have a lot to undo. Thanks for your suggestions. :)

Set up your own mapping. eg.

nmap <Space> :

Now a space in normal mode will lead you to the command line. However, I personally do not find it :difficult to enter. You get used to it after several months of Vimming.
