Can I hide the web file properties dialog box in Office 2003?

Question

We are implementing SharePoint 2007, but as our client, Office 2003. This causes problems when editing metadata, because custom field types, such as BDC columns, do not display properly in the Word web file properties dialog box. To get around this, we would like to disable this dialog to force users to edit metadata in SharePoint.

How can we do this? Also, are there other alternatives that we should consider (not before moving to Office 2007)?
