How can I view journal messages when they are written?

I am debugging a new application that crashes. I want to watch messages when they are logged. Which command should I use?

If you are using a unixy system and your log is a file, you want to tail -f <filename>.

If you are on a Windows system, portstail are available (hat tip - Dave Webb).

If you are on Mac OS X, launch the console (in / Applications / Utilities). This is a nice graphical interface for viewing and searching magazines.
