Why will the 32-bit version be faster than the 64-bit version for development, and vice versa for servers?
One of the main reasons is that 32-bit operating systems cannot address 4 GB of RAM. 4-8 GB can be critical in many development environments where virtual machines are involved or even hard work in general. That is why I always adhere to 64-bit, where possible, and all modern processors support it.
This partly depends on your tools - for example, Visual Studio is still a 32-bit application (but it can be used with x64 - just without a huge win).
