I started developing from Delphi on Mac and thought I shared my observations and see if anyone has any tips or tricks for developing a Mac with Delphi.
While I had some discussion of comments about developing Delphi on Mac. This was in the comments to the answer to another question. After a few months, I thought it was worth writing a short summary for everyone who is thinking about switching the VM host.
General OS X + VMware makes a very nice platform for developing Delphi applications.
Platform
- MacBook Pro 17 "2.93 GHz Core 2 Duo. OS X Leopard
- VMware Fusion 2.0.5
- Vista + Delphi 2007
Observations
- moving the existing PC development environment is straightforward. VMware can build a virtual machine from a physical PC or, as I did, build it from a TrueImage backup. An existing VMS host can simply be copied.
- Obviously, performance is achieved using a virtual machine, but this is not so noticeable. I would say the speed is at least as fast as my previous Core 2 Duo HP 2.1GHz
- get a lot of RAM. 4 GB or 8 if you can afford it. 4GB is quite applicable
- Delphi creates an application with a good screen size of 1.5 GB.
- allocates only 1 core for a virtual machine - faster
- Use a virtual hard disk for the guest OS. This is much faster than starting the guest system from the BootCamp section.
- MBP NVIDIA 9400M 9600M GT. 9600M VMware.
- VMware Fusion WDDM, Aero. Aero, , BootCamp Windows, Aero.
