How was car physics implemented in carmageddon 2?

It was possible to break these machines into pieces and even break them. Thinking about it, how did they do it? What were the basic algorithms they used? Somebody knows?

All that I remember, the game was quite resilient, and it worked well on pentium 2. Also, it did not look exactly accurate, just fun. It was fun dumping these cars.

I guess it was some kind of spring physics combined with some collision and vertex transformation algorithms. Could you provide me detailed information?
