How to create an animated email / SMS notification on an Android phone?

Is there a way to create a notification when a new email arrives in my Android inbox? I would like to show an animation when I receive a new email or SMS - is this possible if I do not write my own email client?

I would also like to set up notifications based on who the sender is, the subject line, etc. - Basically, the same criteria that I can use to filter messages using any of the existing existing clients.

Has anyone tried this before? Do you have any suggestions?

Unfortunately, for any of the default email programs (email and gmail), there are no documented email intent triggers. Unfortunately, I think that your only option is to write your own email client (and, possibly, an error message file / function request) or dig out a non-standard email client that initiates intentions with incoming email.

The intent documentation contains information about all the built-in launch initiatives and intentions, and openintents.org maintains a table of many (but not all) third-party parties.
