Quality Guide for automake + autoconf and other subtleties of the build process?

I am a fairly recent developer, so I have no complicated experience in the assembly processes, etc. Most automake and autoconf tutorials are hard to understand or introduce unnecessary complexity. I have several Perl scripts that I need to deploy as CGI scripts on remote mailboxes (a combination of BSD and Ubuntu servers), and I could use a guide that clearly describes how to create a build process that will work in multiple environments without me reading 100-page long documents.

Does anyone know one thing?
