Capturing print output as a vector format (PDF, SVG, EMF, etc.)

BACKGROUND

  • I use a commercial application in windows that creates a drawing
  • This application allows only two output options: (1) save as a raster file and (2) print to a printer
  • a bitmap is useless for my purposes - I need vectors
  • Looking at the print output (I sent the Windows XPS print driver), it seems clear based on the amount of scaling I can do without losing the details that the base vectors send to the print driver. A.
  • As soon as I get the vectors, I will write code to convert them for another use.

MY QUESTION

  • Whart - my options for getting vectors out of print? (I am open to both commercial and open source).

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS THAT THOUGHTS THEN

  • Take a bitmap and use a program like VectorMagick. I tried this approach. This does not give the fidelity that I seek, even when the original bitmap is large. In practice, I believe that using any tracking method will not give me the quality vectors that I need.
  • Print the Adobe PDF driver. It technically works. I have Adobe CS4, so I can print it, save the resulting PDF, and then import the PDF into Illustrator and then export it as some vector format. The problem with this approach is money / licensing. I have a personal copy of Adobe CS4 - so this is good for me. But I need to fix the vectors at work for commercial purposes - and no, I'm not going to set my personal copy of CS4 to work.
