Best practice for incorporating version information in Java web applications and libraries?

I am working on a project that implements several Java web applications (and related JAR files) using Seam.

What is considered best practice for incorporating version information in deployments? I need to understand how web applications should contain and publish their versions and how this can be done for JAR files.
