How can I find out when a user reads important email notifications?

Our company often issues important email notifications, like many other companies, I am sure. Our management team has contacted us to find out if there is a way to find out when the user reads this important information. I understand that forcing email reading is not reliable, so we are trying to explore other options available to us.

One suggestion was to add a confirmation link at the bottom of the email, which would transmit the email address and be subject to a page that would do some magical logging.

Another suggestion was to remove the important question from the email and put it on a web page (possibly in SharePoint) and track the users who visited the page.

I don’t think the user should be unnecessarily burdened, so I hope the SO community has some better suggestions. What is the best way to get any confirmation or interaction from the user that would suggest that they have actually read important information?
