The company is growing, and we are starting to implement increasingly complex software projects. I feel the need for some tracking software ... I just don't know if it exists.
I currently maintain a Google Doc folder (shared by our 3 developers) with a well-organized document for each module. A document is also created for the main update of a module or modules. For all the other "tracking" ... we have firewall forums.
I want the following:
I want to get an immediate listing of all Project_01 functions or bug fixes in a specific project with the ability to hide or show comments of developers that have been implemented over the past X days.
This clearly indicates a web-based system in which developers enter problems, errors, and features that are labeled appropriately. Entries must be commented, taggable, dated, editable and accountable, based on tags, dates, developers, projects, etc.
I believe that they will perceive me as naive gray-haired veterans floating here, although I have been doing this business for 4 years (so I was there). I donβt think we have the resources to absorb the overhead of implementing something like CMMI ... but then again, I donβt know what is best.
My personal evolution of using Google Docs for each application module + internal phpbb forums for everything else was pretty enjoyable compared to how we started (marker boards, Microsoft Word documents). I just feel that I can go a long way to exceed customer expectations if I had the opportunity to track features / errors / problems better with excellent reporting on demand.
Thoughts?
