SQL Server 2008 fill factor

I am new to SQL Server 2008 fill factor, as mentioned here in SQL Server 2008 BOL,

My 2 confusion

  • Is fill factor used for index page? Or applies to both the index page and the data? At the beginning it seems that the fill factor applies only to the index page - “The fill-factor option is provided for fine tuning the storage and performance of index data”, but at the end it is mentioned - “If existing rows are updated using data that lengthens the row size, use a fill factor of less than 100. Additional bytes on each page will help minimize page breaks caused by extra line length. ". Any comments?

  • Whether the fill factor is used only to restore the index / create the index (only to restore / create the index, free space reserved for the fill factor will be used) or is it applied to any insert / update operation (any insert / update operation will use the free space reserved for the coefficient filling)?
