Joomla URLs: Does the article not have a pretty URL in itself?

I am new to Joomla (1.5) and I am trying to clarify something about how Joomla handles URLs.

I have activated what they call "search engine URLs". But it looks like the page (or "Article" only gets the URL as soon as I link to it from the menu.

Characters (without parameters) are really only attached to pages after linking to them from the menu?

I know that I can alias articles, but they don't seem to be doing anything. The article URL is apparently determined by the alias of the menu item that links to it.

Is this correct, and if so, how can I link to pages without listing them in a menu (for example, from another page).

thanks

Hannes

Update: It really is. Why someone would actually design a CMS this way is outside of me, but I assume it is historical (at some point there were only URLs in the style of the parameters, and then at some point the beautiful URLs were removed addresses).

This is usually for me. The page should not have multiple URLs.

But I found one way around this. This extension is called sh404SEF ( http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/2380/details ). It rewrites all the URLs on the site and is actually pretty smart.
