Cross-platform storage framework + metadata?

I don’t quite know what to use for terminology, so bear with me ...

Are there any cross-platform platforms that help create a “virtual file vault” for encapsulating upload files with a metadata database? I think of something according to iTunes or iPhoto, where the program manages a whole bunch of files (including audio or image files) and has a metadata database so you can easily organize / find these files. I would like to collect something along these lines for files in general.

edit: I hesitate to store files only in a database, for example. MySQL, since there are potentially tens of gigabytes in my application (this question is mentioned in several SO posts, see this one, which gives some links to others ). I look at CouchDB, although it may have promises ....

Why not a database? You can store files inside the database.
